Condensing Tankless Water Heaters vs Non-Condesing Tankless Water Heaters

Condensing

Non-condensing

^

Condensing water heaters use combustion gases to heat water in conjunction with the gas burner, rather than venting those gases outside. Exhaust gases create extra heat, and condensing water heaters benefit from this by taking that heat from the exhaust while the heater is working. This makes them more efficient than most other types of water heaters. Another factor that makes them more efficient is that they have a second heat exchanger that can reuse exhaust heat in order to heat the water.

^

Unlike condensing units, non-condensing water heaters vent exhaust gases outside. Water is heated by a gas burner, causing the water to rise. Then it goes out through an outlet pipe. Of the heat that non-condensing water heaters produce, about 20% of it does not get transferred to the water, and this hot exhaust requires specific venting.

^

While a condensing water heater can work fine with cheaper plastic venting, a non-condensing water heater needs metal venting to manage that superfluous heat, and that type of venting is more expensive.

^

Non-condensing water heaters have been along longer than condensing units, and so the advantage of that is they are dependable and manufacturing issues are generally not a problem.

Key differences between the two units

^

Non-condensing water heater units are cheaper.

^

Condensing water heaters cost less to run overall.

^

Condensing water heaters have a higher efficiency rating.

^

Non-condensing water heaters are slightly smaller.
